@Communalytic Now Supports CrowdTangle URL-Search
We are pleased to announce the addition of CrowdTangle as a data source for Communalytic.
CrowdTangle is a public insights tool from Facebook that allows users to follow, analyze, and report on what’s happening with public content on social media. And Communalytic is our new research tool for studying online communities and online discourse. It can collect and analyze public data from various social media platforms including Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook/Instagram (via CrowdTangle). It uses advanced text and social network analysis techniques to automatically pinpoint toxic and anti-social interactions, identify influencers, map shared interests and the spread of misinformation, and detect signs of possible coordination among seemingly disparate actors. No coding required.
With this new data import feature, Communalytic can now collect and analyze public Facebook and Instagram posts that shared the same URL (ex. a URL to a single NYT story or URL to any domain name) via the CrowdTangle API’s Links Endpoint. It is designed for users with access to CrowdTangle and is useful for studying shared interests in online communities and for detecting signs of possible coordination (a.k.a. coordinated inauthentic behavior) among seemingly disparate accounts on Facebook and Instagram. What can you do with this new data? Introducing the Two-mode Semantic Network
You can use this new data to create a Two-mode Semantic Network. Unlike other data sources available in Communalytic, such as Twitter or Reddit, information about who-replies-to-whom is not provided by the Crowdtangle API. As a result, you will not be able to create a communication network with CrowdTangle data; however, Communalytic can create another type of network commonly referred to as a Two-mode Semantic Network.
As the name suggests, a Two-mode Semantic Network is a graph that describes connections between two types of nodes, where one of the node types represents Social Actors and the other node types represents Semantic Concepts. A connection from Social Actor to Semantic Concept in this network usually implies some form of endorsement, association or affiliation between the two nodes. The exact interpretation of social actors, semantic concepts and network connections will depend on the available data (including any metadata) and research questions that you would like to answer. One of the advantages of a Two-mode Semantic Network over a one-mode semantic network is that the underlying social, communication and/or information structures are partially preserved by incorporating social actors as part of the network and linking them to related semantic concepts based on criteria defined by your research questions and methodology.
Analyzing a Two-mode Semantic in Gephi
Once a Two-mode Semantic Network is created in Communalytic, you can download the resulting network as a GraphML file and explore your data further using popular Social Network Analysis (SNA) programs such as Gephi.
